Background

The army and the man, offered as a choice.

Before the war, both sides come to Krishna. He offers a choice: his Narayani army on one side, and himself on the other — unarmed, and refusing to fight. Duryodhana takes the army and is pleased with the bargain. Arjuna takes the charioteer.

The Sudarshan chakra, the discus Krishna is depicted with, sits in the background of that choice: the power is real and available and is deliberately not what is on offer. What Arjuna receives instead is the conversation that becomes the Gita.
