The bansuri is how Krishna is recognised in art before anything else is noticed, and it is almost absent from the Mahabharat. The flute belongs to the Vrindavan cycle — the childhood, the cowherds, the Bhagavata Purana and centuries of poetry after it — rather than to the counsellor at Kurukshetra.
That is the reason a page of music sits at the end of a library of argument. The teachings hold one aspect of him: the envoy, the charioteer, the man who talks Arjuna back into acting. The flute holds the other, and the collection would be describing half a figure without it.
