Everyone reflects upon the question of Dharma — some upon their own Dharma, some upon another's; discussions about someone's unrighteousness (Adharma) go on and on. There is no one who does not ponder the question of Dharma. But what in truth is Dharma? Has anyone ever truly understood it? Dharma gives a person the knowledge to live in harmony with other people and with the whole of creation. This is the very reason that a person always finds peace in a place of Dharma. Is this not your own experience? How is it possible that a person should have no conflict with any other? Reflect: where there is love, is there conflict as well? You will say, yes, surely there is. But if you reflect a little further, you will realize that at the moment conflict arises, love has been forgotten; then ego awakens, and anger awakens, but love — love does not awaken. For where love awakens, all disputes, all conflicts, all quarrels are destroyed. If such love were to awaken for the whole world — not for human beings alone, but for beast and bird, even for a blade of grass — if there were such love in the heart, would any cause for anger remain? It would not. The feeling of love that lies in one person's heart for another — when that very feeling is held for the whole of creation, it is called compassion (karuna). Compassion means the acceptance of the entire world: for all, only love and nothing else; nowhere, toward anyone, any opposition. Compassion is in truth the essence of all Dharmas. If Dharma is a tree, then compassion is its root, its very foundation. Again and again such a time comes when a person forgets the very root of Dharma, clings instead to a few rules and traditions, and forgets compassion altogether. And then this world fills with conflicts, with envy, with theft, with anger, with enmity — that is, with Adharma. And then the Supreme Self (Paramatma) must take on an incarnation to give human beings true knowledge. This tale of the Mahabharata, too, is the tale of such a time — when some held traditions to be Dharma, while others, filled with Adharma, whirled in the vortex of anger, enmity, and ambition and danced upon the ruin of Dharma; when person had love for person, but no love for the whole world, and there was no compassion in the heart of the world. For this very reason I took on an incarnation: paritranaya sadhunam — to deliver the virtuous; vinashaya cha dushkritam — to destroy the doers of evil; dharma-samsthapanarthaya — to establish Dharma once more. I, Vasudeva, am about to enter into this tale of the Mahabharata.
