What It Means to Be the Best

What does it mean to be the best (shreshtha)? To be the best means to gain more knowledge than others — that is, the worth is placed not upon how much knowledge one has gained oneself, but upon how much greater it is than another's. In this way one may become the best for a little while, but no one can remain the best forever, and then that same discontent, pain, and struggle is born once more. Yet instead of striving to be the best, if one strives to become excellent (uttam), what then? To be excellent means to attain something not out of a desire to have more than another, but solely for the fulfilment of the soul (Atman). On the path of excellence there is no contest with any other; the contest is with oneself alone. In other words, the one who strives to become excellent gains, sooner or later, all true knowledge — whether or not he is ever counted the best; while the one who only chases being greater than others can never become excellent at all. Do reflect on this.

शेष्टता का क्या अर्थ है? शेष्टता का अर्थ है दूसरों से अधिक ज्ञान प्राप्त करना अर्थात मुल्ले इस बात का नहीं कि स्वयम कितना ज्ञान प्राप्त किया मुल्ले इस बात का है कि प्राप्त किया हुआ ज्ञान अन्ने लोगों से कितना अधिक है होती है, कुछ समय के लिए तो शेष्ट बना जा सकता है, किन्तु सदा के लिए कोई शेष्ट नहीं रह पाता, फिर वही असंतोष, पीडा और संघर्ष जन्म लेता है, किन्तु शेष्ट बनने के बदले यदि उत्तम बनने का प्रयत्न करें, तो क्या होगा, उत्तम का अर्� किसी से अधिक पाने की इक्षा से नहीं, मात्र आत्मा की त्रिप्ती हेतु कुछ प्राप्त करना, उत्तम के मार्ग पर किसी अन्य से स्पर्धा नहीं होती, स्वैम अपने आप से स्पर्धा होती है, अर्थात उत्तम बनने का प्रयत्न करने वाले को देर अबेर सारा ज्ञ करता है वो श्रेष्ट बने या ना बने उत्तम कभी नहीं बन पाता अवश्य कीजेगा
