Chapter 32 of 35 — 6 parts, 2 h 03 m in total.
Seven hundred verses spoken between two armies, in the pause before the first arrow. Arjuna asks the questions any honest person would ask; Krishna answers across eighteen chapters that move from grief, through duty and action, to devotion.
This chapter is the longest in the library by a wide margin, and it approaches the Gita through the people around it — Arjuna, who cannot lift his bow; Bhishma, bound by a vow made for someone else's happiness; Drona, a teacher on the wrong side; Karna, who knows the truth of his birth too late to act on it; and Shakuni, who spent a lifetime on a revenge nobody else remembered.
Each is a different answer to the same question: what do you do when your duty, your loyalty and your conscience point in three directions?
Background on the theme of this chapter, not a summary of this particular clip. Watch it for what Krishna actually says.
"The learning gained by walking the path of cunning deserts a man in the hour of crisis. This is no curse of Lord Parashurama, Angaraj — it is a law of nature." "But I made tireless effort to gain that learning, Vasudeva; then why did my learning desert my memory?" "Why did you strive to gain the learning, Angaraj? Did you understand its true worth? Was there in your heart a desire to benefit society by it? Or did you gain the learning only to avenge your own humiliation? In truth, to gain learning no toil is needed — concentration and surrender (samarpan) alone suffice, for knowledge is the innate quality of the soul (Atman). And you are a man of intellect; tell me yourself — while receiving your learning, did your mind remain one-pointed? When a person treats knowledge as a mere means, when he sets out to acquire it in order to obtain some other thing, then his mind cannot grow still as he receives it, and knowledge never becomes a quality of his soul. Just as color becomes the quality of the cloth, so the one who learns for the soul's sake becomes excellent (uttam); but the one who acquires knowledge with the aim of gaining something more spends his whole life in the contest to be the best (shreshtha), and never becomes excellent at all. You too acquired knowledge with an aim. Even dwelling in the shelter of the Lord, your mind did not grow calm; you went on competing with Arjuna, though he sat far away — 'I shall return,' you said, 'but I go giving this assurance: that I shall return as the greatest archer in all Bharatavarsha, and shall become greater than every other disciple of yours.' The very aim of your learning was improper. Then how could that learning not desert you, Angaraj?" "How could I not compete, Vasudeva? How could I compromise with my own life? This society has ceaselessly crushed my possibilities; it gave no honor to my strength, it would not accept my dreams, and it humiliated me forever by calling me the son of a charioteer (suta)." "The divine possibility given by God is a person's birthright, Vasudeva; how can this society deprive anyone of his right? Surely it is a grave crime, Radhe, to make distinctions of caste, and on the basis of these false distinctions to deprive any person, or any part of society, of right, of opportunity, of wealth, or of honor. It is against humanity itself." "Then what is my fault, Vasudeva? If ill feeling was born in my mind, if I competed, if I tried to seize my right by force — then what is my fault, Vasu?" "There was a time, Angaraj, when a Kshatriya king named Kartavirya Arjuna, son of Kritavirya, slew the great sage Jamadagni. Do you know what the sage's son then did? Even in his grief he reflected: why had his father, the sage Jamadagni, been slain? Where had unrighteousness spread? He forgot his own pain, took upon himself the pain of all society, and made it the mantra of his life to destroy the unrighteous Kshatriyas and to purify all of Aryavarta. Had he merely taken his revenge and sat down, he would not be called Lord Parashurama today. Radhe, the sorrow and humiliation you suffered were real; but had you turned them into opportunity, society would have been uplifted and your own welfare secured. Had the other oppressed and suffering found the support of a mighty man like you, how many lives would have filled with happiness. You had the possibility, you had the strength, and you had known that pain yourself — yet you did not dedicate your life to them. You dedicated it instead to Duryodhana, on whose side there was only Adharma and nothing more. Now look upon your state: you stood at Duryodhana's side; you became a partner in a sin such as the disrobing of Panchali; you could not honor your own mother; you slew two sons each of your own brothers. And today, having lost your Dharma, your learning, and your contentment, you stand ready to be killed at the hands of your own younger brother." "You speak the truth, Vasudeva, yet I cannot forget the kindnesses of my friend Duryodhana." "What kindness, Radhe? After befriending you, did Duryodhana grant the right to learning to all the charioteers and suffering people of Hastinapura? Did he take to himself the whole suffering and oppressed community? No, Radhe, no. He befriended you only for his own gain — because of the rivalry against Arjuna that burned in your heart. Had you renounced your own sorrows and taken on the sorrows of society, you would have known the truth of Duryodhana's friendship. Had there been the feeling of kindness in his heart, you could have brought benefit, through him, to the suffering of the world — indeed, you could have freed him from all his unrighteousness and his crimes. But this truth you never knew; the kindnesses done to you had, in truth, no worth at all." "All my life I have given in charity to the suffering and the deprived, Vasudeva; of my wealth I kept nothing for myself." "The true benefit of charity belongs to the giver, not to the one who receives it. Had you used your strength to win freedom for the oppressed who were like yourself, all would have gained by it, Radhe. You say that society destroyed your possibilities; but you never came to know the worth of those possibilities that God had given you. Know one truth: the man who lives for society gains for himself as well; but the man who lives only for himself harms both himself and society. The devastation now unfolding at Kurukshetra is caused neither by Duryodhana nor by Mama Shri Shakuni. This sin belongs to three great warriors — Mahamahim Bhishma, Guru Drona, and you. Had you three renounced your supposed dharma and thought instead of the welfare of society, had you not given your aid to Duryodhana, this war would never have come to pass." "You speak rightly, Vasudeva. This society is harmed not so much by the unrighteous as by the inaction of those who know Dharma. The sin of this great war rests upon our heads." "Now is the time, Radhe: forget your sorrows, renounce your unrighteousness, and accept your death. In this alone lies the welfare of society and your own, Radhe." "I accept your command, Vasudeva." To wipe away the stain of his humiliation — when the bow is no longer in your hand, when the wheel of your chariot has sunk into the earth and you have forgotten your learning — it is by seizing such a moment that I must have you slain. "If the wheel of my chariot rises free of the earth, dear Arjuna, then the course of time itself will change; and I shall surely try to draw the wheel out. I am a warrior; to strive to the very last moment is my duty. My sunset is near; before Lord Surya conceals himself, slay me. Now I wish to journey on together with my father."
